Why The Baboosic Greenway Matters
The Baboosic Greenway isn’t just another path; it's a vision for a future where five rural New Hampshire towns are seamlessly connected. It's an initiative that aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and mobility in the region. Imagine being able to travel 21 miles throughout the region, weaving through 5 municipalities, all while enjoying the serenity of two historic abandoned rail beds.
The Safety of a Shared-Use Path
A shared-use path empowers people of all ages – from young children on their first bikes to elderly residents taking a peaceful stroll. Unlike traditional roads or lanes, shared-use paths are purposefully built separate from the roadway, eliminating interactions with motor vehicles. This means that individuals and families can walk, bike, jog, or even roller-skate without the constant worry of contending with dangerous motor vehicles.
A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity
The state of New Hampshire recognizes the potential of the Baboosic Greenway, and in an unparalleled move, has awarded the Town of Amherst with a generous 80% funding for a project valued at $2,379,566. This project's goal? To transform an existing 1.9-mile shared-use path into a 4.6-mile-long safety-focused network that spans from the border with the Town of Milford, passing through the Amherst Village, and stretching roughly along the abandoned Milford & Manchester Branch rail bed to Walnut Hill Rd.

While the state’s support is monumental, we still need to raise $475,000 to fully activate these funds. $70,000 has already been committed.

The Town has been aggressively trying to accomplish this grant, with its 80%/20% magic, for a long time and finally we have been successful. To be clear, for every dollar we raise through contributions, the State will contribute another $4 to our project, saving Town taxpayers significant funds. Once completed, Amherst will have yet another extraordinary benefit to provide for our citizens, our region and those considering living or opening businesses in our community.
